Other forms: hot dogs
A hot dog is a mild sausage served on a bun. For an easy backyard cookout, you can just throw a bunch of hot dogs on the grill.
Sometimes called "wieners" or "frankfurters," hot dogs are an extremely common summertime food in the U.S., served at baseball games and barbecues across the country. Hot dog enthusiasts frequently argue about the appropriate condiments — some prefer ketchup, others swear by mustard and pickle relish, and still others insist on topping theirs with sauerkraut. Though hot dogs are now as American as apple pie, they were imported to the Midwest in the late 19th century from Germany.
